Kate Winslet earned an Oscar as an ex-Nazi concentration camp guard, now a conductor on a trolley car, who befriends and has an affair with a teenage boy during the 1950s. The story actually begins much later, with the grown-up boy (Ralph Fiennes) looking back on his life.




JULY 2009

"Happy Go Lucky"

Poppy (Sally Hawkins, in a Golden Globe-winning role) is a perpetually cheerful 30-year-old London teacher. When her beloved bike is stolen, she decides to take up driving, and is paired with Scott (Eddie Marsan), an instructor who's her polar opposite. Their relationship is strained until Poppy's bright personality attracts a co-worker, making Scott unexpectedly jealous. Alexis Zegermanand Karina Fernandez co-star in Mike Leigh's effervescent comedy (nominated for a Best Picture Golden Globe).

"Chop Shop"

Twelve-year-old street orphan Alejandro (Alejandro Polanco) lives and works amid the mass of auto shops and junkyards known as the "Iron Triangle" just outside Queens, N.Y. When his teenage sister (Isamar Gonzales) arrives, the ambitious boy is inspired to make life better for them both. Nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, this second feature from director Ramin Bahraniis a tough, eye-opening look at life on society's margins.
